Working in Beijing without a Z visa: four facts

In practice, a foreigner cannot work legally in Beijing on a tourist visa, short business visa, or family visa (e.g. S2) alone without the package of work permit + Z visa (or equivalent category) + residence permit. “I’m already in Beijing” does not turn a visit visa into work authorization.

  1. The usual path exits China. Employer → work-permit notification → Z visa at an embassy/consulate outside the mainland → entry → work permit and residence at PSB (local timelines, often ~30 days after entry). Rare exceptions (highly skilled, etc.) are case-specific, not forum tips.
  2. PSB issues residence; it does not “fix” illegal work. Without a sponsoring employer and papers in order, there is no clean shortcut.
  3. Family visa ≠ permission to work. S1/S2 and similar have their own rules; getting paid for local work without authorization is the risk authorities typically cite.
  4. EOR / “black freelance” do not erase the rule. If the work is in mainland China, you usually need the correct permit. Related Shanghai flow: work visa, bank, and WeChat.

What you can do while you wait

  • Travel, hotels, card/WeChat payments for your stay type. Beijing: cash to WeChat Pay (if live).
  • If the passport is at PSB: travel with the receipt.
  • Do not sign “trial work” without papers assuming it is safely gray.
