Z visa and residence permit are not the same

The Z visa is for entry to work. After that, in mainland China, the document renewed each year (or per contract) is usually the work residence permit, together with extending the work permit (national foreigner system). Forums call it “Z visa renewal”; at a Beijing window the process has another name.

Beijing’s official guidance asks you to apply for residence permit extension in advance (often about 30 days before expiry). The employer starts or confirms sponsorship. ErrandsChina does not replace HR or a lawyer.

Four practical steps in Beijing

Employer and work permit. HR confirms the contract and handles extension or sponsor change in the work-permit system. Without that, PSB has no basis.
Appointment and form. Beijing uses the government affairs portal or Exit-Entry appointment channel (also WeChat, depending on the day). Bring the visa/residence application form with a recent photo (format the office asks for).
Documents at the window. Valid passport, current residence permit, Beijing accommodation registration, valid work-permit notice or document, employer letter. If a medical exam is required, the office sets the window and clinic.
Hand in the passport and get a receipt. The office keeps the passport while processing. You get an acceptance receipt. Published timelines are often on the order of 5–7 working days by category; that day’s paper wins. Guide: travel with the PSB receipt.

Short passport: what usually happens

User reports and specific offices say residence or extension cannot run past passport validity. If the passport has five months left, do not expect a full year on the stamp. That is not an ErrandsChina promise—ask at your window with the passport in hand.

If the passport is being renewed and residence is expiring, the office sets the order. Do not assume “any friend” can submit for you without the authorization that day requires.

Logistics in Beijing

Beijing Exit-Entry main office has been published at addresses such as Andingmen (Dongcheng). Confirm site and hours on your appointment—they change.
Fees: often Alipay, WeChat Pay, or card. Cash does not always work.
Without the physical passport you do not exit the country. With the receipt, a train window sometimes works; online 12306 usually does not. Details in the receipt guide.

Can I renew if the passport expires in five months?

Often yes, with a short validity aligned to the passport. Not an automatic full year.

Do I have to go in person?

In many cases yes. Some offices allow a representative with that day’s required documents. There is no one notarized letter for all of Beijing.

How long does it take?

Beijing guides talk about several working days (e.g. 5–7 by type). The receipt and appointment screen win.

Can I change employer in the same renewal?

First sponsorship / work-permit change. Then residence. Labor and PSB set the order—not the agent. Guangzhou transfer: transfer Z to a new employer.
