Yes. Foreign travelers can buy real-name China train tickets with a valid passport. China Railway’s 12306 English FAQ states that foreign passengers can purchase tickets with passports accepted under the applicable rules. There is an English registration and booking interface for foreign passports.

China uses real-name ticketing: the name and document on the booking must match what you show at the station. Four practical paths:

1. 12306 — official railway site/app (no agency fee)
2. Alipay or WeChat — mini-programs that still use 12306 inventory
3. Trip.com (or similar) — English UX and international cards; service fee at checkout
4. Local help — station window accompaniment or coordination when DIY stalls

Option 1: Book on 12306

12306 is the official China Railway channel. No third-party booking fee. The English site accepts foreign passports for registration; the Chinese site is the full product.

What you typically need

• A valid passport (data entered exactly as on the document)
• A mainland / Hong Kong / Macao / Taiwan mobile number or an email, as the form allows that day
• A payment method 12306 accepts (Chinese bank card, Alipay, or WeChat Pay). Foreign cards almost never work—treat success as a lucky exception, not the plan
• Identity verification completed for your account (and for each passenger you buy for)

Basic flow: register → verify passport → search train → add passengers → pay → keep the booking and the same passport for travel.

Tickets are not sold months ahead. On the usual calendar, sales open about 15 days including the travel day; holidays can shift. 12306’s calendar wins.

Published online sale hours are often roughly 05:00–01:00 (Tuesdays sometimes shorter). Confirm on the day you book.

Option 2: Alipay or WeChat

If you already use Alipay or WeChat in China, the Railway 12306 mini-program can be convenient. It is still China Railway inventory—not a separate ticket pool.

For a short tourist trip, do not open a Chinese bank account only to buy one train ticket. If you are not already set up for mobile payments, Trip.com or a window visit is usually simpler.

Option 3: Trip.com (international platform)

Trip.com and similar sites are useful when you want English, international cards, and less time on 12306 registration. The trade-off is a booking/service fee shown at checkout (often about 10–20 RMB per ticket—check the breakdown).

If you bought on Trip.com, start changes and questions there. Do not assume 12306 will fix a third-party booking.

Option 4: Local help in China

Use this when the problem is no longer “find a train,” but several passengers, verification stuck on “pending,” multi-city itineraries, or last-minute changes. At a station window, staff generally ask for the passenger’s original document. Rules can vary by station and day—confirm at the counter before you rely on a photocopy.

On 12306, a verified account adds people under “passengers / contacts,” with name and number exactly as on the passport. Until that passport is verified (or ready for verification under the English FAQ wording), that account cannot buy for them.

What 12306’s identity FAQ actually says (not a forum tip):

• A verified account opened with a Chinese ID (or similar domestic ID types listed by 12306) can add passengers with Chinese IDs and foreign passports.
• While adding, passengers stuck in “pending verification” cannot exceed five at a time.
• Total passengers under one account are normally capped around 30 (seasonal adjustments possible).
• A verified account opened with a foreign passport can add other passport-style documents, but cannot add Chinese resident ID cards.

Forum comments about “three foreign passports and nine Chinese IDs” are not the official rule. Use the limits shown on your account screen.

If 12306 requires identity verification at a station, that person goes with their own passport original. A colleague cannot complete that step for them.

Passport verification

Registration needs passport data-page details and a China mainland / Hong Kong / Macao / Taiwan mobile number or an email. Some checks pass automatically. If not, upload a clear photo of the data page (JPG/PNG, under 10 MB) or go to a major station window with the original passport.

Manual online review often takes several business days—treat the status on screen as the source of truth, not a fixed “1–3” or “3–5” promise.

Without verification, the account cannot buy online or add passengers. Enter single-word given names the way the current form instructs (community tip: duplicate the name in both fields only if the screen accepts it—prefer official guidance when it conflicts).

At the station
