Work permit ID and train tickets: three facts

The foreigner’s Work Permit ID card looks like a Chinese shenfenzheng, but it does not replace a passport for buying or gating onto mainland trains. Machines, 12306, and most windows expect a passport (or, in some official cases, permanent residence). Booking paths: how foreigners buy train tickets.

  1. Machines do not read it as a Chinese ID. Shanghai Hongqiao and other stations: repeated community reports of rejection. Carry a valid passport.
  2. Online 12306: passport / permanent residence. Do not plan on the Work Permit ID as the booking document. If your passport is at the PSB, check window / receipt options by city: travel while passport is at PSB.
  3. At the window, that day’s clerk decides edge cases. Many counters want passport only. “Looks like a Chinese ID” is not a rule.

What usually works

  • Valid passport — the normal path in app, machine, and window
  • Permanent residence card — cited in some official 12306 document lists

FAQ

Can I gate through with only the Work Permit ID?

Do not count on it. The usual flow asks for the same document used to buy the ticket—almost always the passport.

What about domestic flights?

Different rules. This article is mainland trains only.

Does a work visa change anything?
