Z visa, residence, bank, and WeChat Pay (usual order)

In Shanghai, for a foreigner with a job, the typical path is: Z visa → work permit → residence permit at Exit-Entry (PSB) → accommodation registration → bank account → link WeChat Pay (and often Alipay). Without residence and registration, many banks refuse or set odd conditions. That is what you see at the window—not a law you can quote at every branch.

Four practical steps

  1. Residence and registration slip. The employer handles the work permit. You (or hotel/landlord) register accommodation. Keep the paper or screenshot—banks often ask for it.
  2. Bank account. Passport + residence + registration + Chinese phone in your name. Large branches (ICBC, Bank of China, CMB, etc.) are often more flexible than small outlets. Minimum deposit and remaining visa time: ask there.
  3. Bank app. Turn on mobile banking; without it, linking WeChat sometimes fails.
  4. WeChat Pay. Me → Services / Wallet → add UnionPay card → passport/residence verification. Can take days. With only a foreign Visa/Mastercard you can often pay merchants; P2P transfers often need a Chinese account.

  • Valid passport and residence permit
  • Accommodation registration (hotel or PSB slip)
  • Work permit (card or notification)
  • Chinese phone number
  • Sometimes tax ID / fiscal data—the branch decides

Logistics in Shanghai

  • PSB appointment / Shanghai portal: hours change; confirm your district office.
  • Bring originals to bank and train. Phone photos are not enough at a window.
  • Short tourist stay: sometimes Alipay/WeChat + foreign card works without a Chinese account. A local account is a different story.
  • Trains: tickets with a passport.

Sometimes a branch tries with passport and hotel; many want residence. Do not assume it.

Half an hour to a couple of hours at the window; appointments stretch it. Shanghai’s online channel is usually Chinese.
